We’ve all done it. Declared a new path forward (“No more facebook, I am going to read a book instead!”) only to find ourselves, hours later, back in the habit. Scrolling, barely present, and regretting it later.
It’s not your fault. There are literally millions of dollars being poured into making smartphone apps, television shows, and sugary/salty foods addictive. It’s big business. Manipulating human habits is an enormous business.
We are a small business. We want to make space for people to connect with their bodies, examine the habits of their mind and movement, and learn to care for themselves in our overly busy world.
It’s hard to compete with big business. And we don’t really want to. We are not interested in manipulating people into yoga and meditation. We refuse to do it. Many marketing strategies suggesting that to grow your business, you need to create a problem for people, and tell them how you are going to solve it. (We recently saw a website for meditation that wanted you to click on “10 ways you are messing up your mindfulness practice”. Yuck.)
Your body and your mind are not a problem to be solved. We are committed to that point of view. We are not here to tell you what you are doing wrong and how to do it better.
And, there may be things about your life that you want to change and grow. That’s different than looking at yourself as a problem. Change and growth are a wonderful part of being an evolving human. Instead of approaching change as “cutting out bad habits,” we want to encourage you to focus on what you could add (back) in.
In October, we will be having a 30-day yoga and mindfulness challenge, an opportunity for each of us to focus on what we want to add into our lives. What practices can we add to our lives so that some of the other pieces (like habits on our phones, computers, or TVs) might simply fall away?
Leslie will be creating a take-home calendar (with stickers!) for the 30-day challenge. This will give you ideas, suggestions, and goal-setting for short at-home practices you might to commit to doing each day. At the studio, you can set a goal of how many classes to attend during the 30 days and you can mark your progress with more stickers on our big chart, because everyone loves stickers!
Throughout the month we’ll have a few chances to gather as a community, to support one another in the challenge. On Monday, Oct 8, join us for a Community Hike, and on Sunday, Oct 28, come for coffee and a Brunch-luck (a pot-luck but with snacky brunch items). We can’t wait to see you!

Leena Miller Cressman is the director of Queen Street Yoga. Right now she’s in love with practicing the Tensegrity Repair Series, handstands and doing gentle twists over her bolster. You’ll also find her cruising around on her rusty but trusty bike, and tending to her community garden plot full of arugula, kale, and basil.
Emma Dines is the creative director of Queen Street Yoga. She loves writing, visiting thrift stores and going for walks in the woods. She also loves cartwheeling, sewing and making her own kimchi.
